In concert with federal, state, and local partners working to strengthen and diversify Central Appalachia’s economy, New Roots Community Farm (NRCF) is cultivating an ag-entrepreneurial ecosystem that is giving rise to a vibrant local foods economy in the New River Gorge region of Southern West Virginia.
Established in Fayetteville, WV in 2019, NRCF is an 82-acre diversified production demonstration farm with a year-round Farm Market. The market features produce grown on-site alongside a curated selection of meat, dairy, eggs, pantry goods, and value-added products from regional producers.
Position Overview
The Farm Market Sales Associate is a core operations role responsible for consistent execution of the Farm Market during weekend sales shifts and supporting the systems that keep the market running smoothly.
This role covers:
Saturday + Sunday: front-of-house market operations and sales
Monday: cleaning, inventory, and operational reset + biweekly aggregation route
The Farm Market is entering its fourth year with established systems and Standard Operating Procedures in place. This role is responsible for executing those systems consistently and contributing to their improvement through day-to-day use.
This position also supports regional product movement through a biweekly aggregation and delivery route to Lewisburg, WV.
Success in this role means the market is clean, well-stocked, organized, and operating smoothly— supporting both strong sales and a high-quality customer experience, while staying connected to the energy of a busy, community-centered local food space.
The Farm Market Sales Associate reports to the Farm Market Manager.
Core Responsibilities
Market Operations & Customer Experience
Staff the Farm Market during weekend shifts, providing strong, consistent customer service
Execute daily operations including opening/closing, register use, and maintaining an organized sales floor
Maintain merchandising standards, including stocking, labeling, and display upkeep
Process transactions using Square POS, including SNAP, WIC, and other food access programs
Maintain a welcoming, food-forward environment that encourages customers to explore and try new products
Be part of maintaining strong, positive relationships with the local farmers and producers who supply the market
Inventory & Back-of-House Operations
Maintain cleanliness and organization across market spaces, including storage and walk-in refrigeration
Support inventory systems through counting, organization, and quality checks
Assist the Farm Market Manager with quarterly inventory
Oversee back-of-house frozen inventory, including storage, tracking, and rotation
Monitor cold storage and maintain temperature logs
Receive and organize incoming product from producers
Follow established Standard Operating Procedures and flag improvements
Lead Monday cleaning and reset of the market
Identify and communicate inventory needs, equipment issues, or workflow improvements
Aggregation & Product Movement
Execute a biweekly aggregation and delivery route to Greenbrier County (Lewisburg, WV)
Load, transport, and deliver products in a timely and professional manner
Support accurate handling and tracking of aggregated goods
Events & Other
Staff Farm Market events as needed
Support in-store and event sampling, including setup and customer engagement around products
Attend regular check-ins with Farm Market Manager, Market Director, and full team
Support shared team coverage, including occasional shift swaps and maintaining consistent weekend staffing
Additional relevant Farm Market tasks as assigned
Required Skills & Qualifications
Experience in retail, food service, or customer-facing roles
Strong attention to detail and ability to maintain organized systems
Ability to work independently and manage time effectively
Comfort engaging with customers and communicating about food products
Comfort helping customers understand and use fresh produce, including storage and preparation
Ability to lift, bend, and stand for extended periods (up to 50 lbs)
Valid driver’s license and willingness to complete biweekly delivery route
Reliability, especially for weekend scheduling
Compensation & Schedule
$18/hour
Average 24 hours weekly (range 16–32 depending on season)
Schedule: Peak Season (May–Dec.): Saturday, Sunday, and Monday Low Season (Jan.–April): Saturday and Monday, plus a third flexible shift weekly
Organizational breaks: Labor Day, Thanksgiving, Black Friday, plus a two week organizational break spanning Christmas Eve to New Year’s Day
