Organization Overview: New Roots Community Farm (NRCF) is an 82-acre diversified agricultural resource center located just outside the Town of Fayetteville, West Virginia. We cultivate an ag-entrepreneurial ecosystem that is giving rise to a vibrant local foods economy in the New River Gorge region. As an agricultural nonprofit our work centers on food and farm business development, market access, community education and food access initiatives. NRCF operates a 2.5 acre intensive vegetable production system that includes some small fruit, orchard, and flower production. The farming space is also home to a year round market serving over 50 food and farm based businesses, an 18 member community garden, and site for educational programming and community events.
Position Overview: We are looking for a self-directed, motivated, and experienced person to join our Farm Team in its sixth season of production. The seasonal farmhand will work with the Farm Team to manage and execute all activities required to run a successful production farm that meets sales goals and demonstrates best practices for agroecological farm operations. The position will run from May 4, 2026 - October 16, 2026. This is a seasonal position that will average 24 hours of work per week over the course of the season. The Farm Team includes four Co- Managers with focused responsibilities in unique areas of farm management. This position supports field production, harvest, wash/pack, and general farm and crop maintenance. They will report to our Manager responsible for team management. Ideal candidates are those who have at least one year of farm experience, enjoy working outdoors in all weather conditions, and are comfortable performing physically demanding tasks as part of a team.
The emphasis for the Seasonal Farm Hand will be in supporting harvesting, washing and packing of produce to serve our on-site farm market, farm-to-school programs, food access initiatives and local restaurants. This role will also engage in all production activities including a handful of on farm events and field trips.
Primary Responsibilities
Harvest crops, wash, and pack crops according to specifications for wholesale or retail markets
Prepare beds for direct seeding and transplanting
Seed and transplant crops
Water and maintain seedlings
Perform a variety of crop maintenance activities
Perform general property maintenance activities and infrastructure improvements
Participate in team meetings
Other duties as assigned

$16/hour

Position Overview: The New Roots Summer High School Internship at New Roots is an 8-week, hands-on learning experience for high school students interested in sustainable agriculture, food systems, and community impact. Interns will work closely with farm staff to support daily production while gaining practical skills in farming, teamwork, and professional development.
This internship is designed to build real-world experience, leadership skills, and career readiness. In addition to farm work, interns will complete a self-directed project and participate in structured mentorship and resume-building workshops.
Program Dates: June 9 – August 6
Schedule: Tuesday–Thursday, 9:00 AM–5:00 PM (24 hours/week)Primary Responsibilities
Assist with daily farm operations, including harvesting, cultivating, direct seeding, transplanting, and crop maintenance
Wash and pack produce according to wholesale and retail market specifications
Create market-ready flower bouquets
Maintain a clean, organized, and safe farm workspace
Work collaboratively with staff and fellow interns to complete assigned tasks
Develop and complete a self-directed project related to agriculture, food justice, marketing, research, or another approved topic
Participate in career mentorship sessions, resume writing workshops, and professional development activities
Demonstrate reliability, punctuality, and a positive attitude in an outdoor work environment
Compensation
$12/hour
